Bengt Lindström

Place : Sundsvall, Suède

Bengt Lindström (1925 – 2008) belongs to that rare lineage of artists driven by the force of their origins. Born in Storsjökapell, in the wild lands of Jämtland, Sweden, he grew up amidst Sami legends, mountains, and northern winds. This mythical, powerful landscape would nourish his entire artistic vision.

In the late 1940s, he moved to Paris, drawn by the breath of modernity. There, he met Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, Corneille, Pierre Alechinsky, and other members of the CoBrA group, sharing their revolt, instinctive energy, and the joy of expressive gesture. With them, he affirmed a painting that is raw, visceral, where matter becomes flesh and color a cry.

Living between France and Sweden, Lindström created a universe populated with earthly faces, vibrant totems, and archaic gods. His palette, flashes of ochre, red, and acidic green, evokes the northern lights and the violent beauty of the primal world. Each painting, each sculpture seems to summon the vital forces of the cosmos, like a pagan ritual celebrating the raw power and beauty of life.
